Automated Design Approximation to Overcome Circuit Aging

Transistor aging phenomena manifest themselves as degradations in the main electrical characteristics of transistors. Over time, they result a significant increase cell propagation delay, leading to errors due timing violations, since operating frequency becomes unsustainable circuit ages. Conventional techniques employ guardbands mitigate aging-induced delay increase, which leads considerable performance losses from beginning circuit's lifetime. Leveraging inherent error resilience vast number application domains, approximate computing was recently introduced an mitigation mechanism. In this work, we present first automated framework for generating aging-aware circuits. Our framework, by applying directed gate-level netlist approximation, induces small functional and recovers degradation aging. As result, our optimized circuits eliminate errors. Experimental evaluation over variety arithmetic image processing benchmarks demonstrates that average merely $5\times10^{-3}$, completely eliminates guardbands. Compared respective baseline without (i.e., iso-performance evaluation), generated is $1208$x smaller.
